FAQ
Q: Are the characters Chinese or Japanese?
A: Both! All 50 characters work in Japanese, 49 are just right in Mandarin Chinese ('egg' is the odd one out!) and about 43 are correct for Cantonese.
Q: So Chinese and Japanese are the same?
A: No. It's a bit like an English speaker trying to read French: some words are the same, but they are different languages.
Q: How many Chinese characters are there?
A: There are around 2,000 Chinese characters in Japanese, and the Chinese use around 10,000! Learning the 50 characters of Karuta - karateforyourbrain.com is a fun first step.
Q: What is Karuta?
A: In Japan 'karuta' is a name that applies to any card game where some form of 'question' is read out and players must look for the 'answer' on a card. The most famous of these is Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred People, One Poem), which is based on medieval poetry, but the game is used in many other ways too.
